Why do I do this every time?

I always seem to answer people back when they say hello, even though they are normally talking on the phone or to someone behind me. It's really embarrassing. I also seem to respond every time someone says "Gemma" even though I don't recognise the voice. Does anyone else do this? I am fed up of having to pretend I was talking on the phone. Any other tips?
