When my ipod touch is set on static wifi, it goes really slow and you have to reconnect every 10 minutes?

My ipod touch isn't recognizing the IP address so I set it on static so I could manually enter, and now it goes really slow and I have to reconnect to the wifi every 10 minutes. Can I change the IP address on DHCP?
